While I welcome the opportunity to answer your questions directly, I want to provide you some information about the questions I hear most often. Read on!
What is ADHD coaching?
Perhaps the ADD Coach Academy (ADDCA) says it best: “Building upon unconditional acceptance and a powerful appreciation of the client’s potential, uniqueness, strengths, capabilities and wholeness, coaching is an ongoing collaborative partnership created to facilitate personal growth and awareness that leads to conscious choice, focused action, and a meaningful, rewarding life.”
What’s the difference between coaching and counseling?
Counseling and traditional therapy are more about answering your “why” and may offer more of look-back perspective. That has tremendous value. Coaching focuses on the you in the "now" to answer more who, what, how, and when questions with an eye to the future and who you are/want to become. Together we explore your real-time, real-world experiences and your aspirations for the "not now" future and your desired outcomes in that future that's a few minutes, hours or years from now!
What makes you as an ADHD Coach different from a general life or business coach?
While I may share similar training and life experience as other life or business coaches, I have trained extensively to understand how ADHD (and other neurodevelopmental differences) impacts our lives, personal and professional. That, in addition to my own lived experience with ADHD (mom, entrepreneur, executive levels of nonprofit, for-profit, and government, and as an academician), offers a different perspective, better aligned with your lived experience.
How long do I work with you?
We will answer that question together based on your unique needs and circumstances. In general, I ask adults entering coaching to consider committing to at least 12 sessions over a 3-4 month period. This is an investment in your Self, an opportunity to transform your life - what might it be like to make that investment without shortchanging yourself?
Ultimately, how long we partner is dependent on your goals, your needs, and your circumstances. After the initial coaching period has been completed, you have the option to continue for a set number of sessions (3,6,9 or 12), to shift to 2 sessions a month rather than weekly, or to take some time to experiment on your own with all that you have discovered. You may return to coaching at a later time if you wish and as my client load allows.
Do we have to meet in person?
No. Most clients prefer to meet using a virtual meeting or chat platform. Some clients prefer to meet by phone. Our first conversation may be scheduled for a phone call or a video chat. You decide when you schedule through this website.
Do I have to pay for coaching packages in full up front?
You have the option to make payments in advance of sessions in one payment or you may pay for a set number of sessions ahead of time if that makes your life less of a struggle.
Will my insurance pay for coaching?
Unfortunately, I have not encountered a U.S.-based insurance company that understands the immense value of ADHD coaching as an adjunct therapy. That said, some HSAs or FSAs may be used to cover the costs and some employers may be willing to cover or share the costs of coaching. Check with your insurance carrier, HSA/FSA manager or Human Resources if you are comfortable doing so.
Do you offer group coaching?
Yes. Some groups are employer specific. Some are topic specific, and some are built around a shared interest or profession. Set a reminder to check “Upcoming Events” for group coaching opportunities or subscribe to my newsletter for announcements delivered directly to your inbox.
Can an ADHD Coach help me understand and cope with my colleague, partner or family member's ADHD?
Absolutely. The presence of ADHD in a household or business relationship impacts more than the individual experiencing the world through an ADHD-wired brain. You have an important role in contributing to and maintaining a healthy relationship at work and at home. Understanding ADHD and its effects or potential effects on relationships may contribute to improving a languishing relationship or keeping a good relationship health for many years to come.
